Lindsay Jane’s proposal was awarded $500 to purchase incentives for students as part of a campus-wide program that recognizes safe, respectful, or responsible behavior. Started in the 2010-11 school year, and based on a nationally-known model, any staff member who sees a student demonstrating safe, respectful, or responsible behavior fills out and submits a “PAH! Paper”. Every full week of school, there is a drawing in each area: elementary, middle, and high school. PAH! Papers are randomly drawn, and the students receive small awards, such as gift cards, books, small toys or craft kits. On average; 70 students are recognized weekly through this program. At the end of the school year, one PAH! Paper is drawn from each area for larger awards, such as backpacks, flashing alarm clocks, sports equipment, etc. This program has been a huge success and is in its fourth year funded by FOSD.
ASL Spelling Bee
Kathleen Davis’s request for up to $605.31 for launching a Spelling Bee competition at OSD was funded. This project is intended to develop bilingual learning (ASL and English), improve independent reading and research skills, instill school spirit and a sense of community and demonstrate the value placed on ASL as a language.
Family Learning Program 2016
Sharla Jones and Matt Boyd were granted $1,800 for their Special Projects application to again hold a Family Learning Weekend at OSD. There are workshops for parents on literacy, behavior, resources, ASL, transition and other topics. This is a free overnight activity for parents and children, with meals lodging and workshops free for all participants.
Shakespeare Festival Trip
Gayle Robertson was granted $2,281 for her Special Projects application to partially fund a trip on May 27-29 for 12 OSD students to travel to Ashland. They will study plays, see interpreted performances, and apply thinking strategies to a variety of experiences. The FOSD grant writing committee will attempt to find outside grant funding for this program in future.
Camcorder and Tripod
RJ Rich’s request for a camcorder and tripod at a cost of $409.99 was approved. The purpose of this equipment is to enable the training, observation and improvement of teacher effectiveness. Also, the equipment will enable documentation of the research-based practice known as Reciprocal Teaching. Measurable gains in student reading comprehension will be partially documented with the aid of the camcorder.
