Please support Friends of Oregon School for the Deaf on Giving Tuesday, December 3.  Please see our appeal letter below.  Use our donate button or send a check to:  PO Box 15053, Salem OR 97309.  Thanks!

Dear Parents, Alums, and Other Friends of OSD:

Thanks to donors like you, last year FOSD funded almost $30,000 towards
the purchase of a Computer Controlled Router for OSD’s Construction
Academy.  This massive piece of equipment is providing students of the
program with immediate employment upon graduation at a high rate of pay.

During the last couple of years, donors to FOSD have also helped fund the
Family Learning Program, Read a Million Pages literacy challenge, ASL
Spelling Bee, student participation at the Washington School for the Deaf
“Flying Hands” competition, “ball” seating for classrooms, Poetry Out Loud
competition, trips to the Chinese and Japanese gardens.  Your contributions
have also funded yearly trips to the Shakespeare Festival for students to see
plays and to meet Deaf actors.  Some of OSD’s braver students have even
performed their poems on the outdoor stage in front of the Bowman Theater.
Students learn, but teach as well by increasing Deaf and ASL visibility and
exposure.

Friends of the Oregon School for the Deaf is a501(c)(3) organization that
supports the students and staff at OSD beyond the scope of the operating
funds provided by the Oregon Department of Education. Any staff member
at OSD may apply for an award.

Students at OSD deserve the same opportunities for a high- quality education
as other children in our state. They have the same dreams, the same hopes,
and the same aspirations as the children you see in your neighborhood and
community every day.  In addition, some OSD students have other physical
and cognitive challenges.  It takes specialized educational equipment and
enrichment activities —above and beyond the basic resources provided by
state funding—to fully develop the potential of each student at OSD.

Your tax-deductible donation to Friends of OSD will enhance the experiences
of the children, ages 5 through 21, whom OSD serves.

Please consider making a contribution to Friends of OSD today by mailing your
check to the PO Box above or by donating through our website.  Your
contribution will help Deaf and Hard of Hearing children at OSD get the
support, experiences and tools that they need to achieve a brighter future.

Sincerely,

The Board Members of Friends of OSD

Our Mission

IMG_2702The FOSD mission and purpose is to support the enhancement of programs and services for students at OSD beyond the State’s funding responsibility*. The FOSD Board has identified four initiatives for which awards may be granted:  education, cultural activities, innovative programs and minor capital improvement projects.

Founded by a small group of dedicated people in 2006, FOSD was established to support the students at the Oregon School for the Deaf (OSD).  From that beginning, Friends of OSD has grown into a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with an all-volunteer Board of Directors. In 2014, FOSD created an Advisory Council of 15 members.

The Friends of OSD Strategic Plan provides direction as the nonprofit continues to expand. We are proud to say that 95% of all grants and donations go directly to programs that benefit students.

*The State of Oregon is responsible for operating programs and services for the students at the Oregon School for the Deaf (OSD). Federal case law establishes the expectation that special education services provided by a school be reasonably designed to ensure students make progress. Friends of OSD will not replace or supplant the responsibilities of the state.
